Hello. My name is Richard and thank you for looking.
Four years ago, at age 56, my life was turned upside down in a single afternoon. Earlier that day, I visited my family doctor for a routine annual checkup and several hours later, I was rushed to the ER where a team of doctors and nurses were waiting for me. My Potassium was above 15, and my kidneys were failing and were found to function at around ten percent of normal. The diagnosis: End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD).
Within days I was scheduled for surgery to implant a dialysis catheter, and a few weeks after surgery, I started daily dialysis. Also on that day, my name was placed at the bottom of a kidney transplant waiting list. Now at 60 years old, I am told I have to wait another 4 years to reach the top of that list. The average wait time is seven to eight years without a donation. I am beginning to wonder if I will make it that long as the effects have taken a great toll already. Thus the reason I am reaching out and asking for the most precious gift anybody could ever receive ... the gift of a life saving kidney.
Aside from the very real physical toll that End Stage Renal Disease takes, my most difficult issue with kidney disease is the struggle with constant fatigue. As I am married and am the sole provider for my family I have no choice but to push past that fatigue. While I have an adult son who is a is Fire Fighter Paramedic, my Wife is a full time stay-at-home Mother for two children. As I am responsible for the mortgage and all household bills, I continue to work as a full time Senior Software Engineer with a local area medical devices company.
Through all of that, I absolutely love my life and those near to me. Family keeps me going. I just wish this kidney nightmare would end soon. If you have ever thought about saving somebody's life then please consider a kidney donation. I can not begin to imagine how giving a life might touch the inner spirit but I do know that to receive that kind of gift ... is to receive a whole new life. I can not begin to describe how that must feel. How do you put something like that into words?
